Art Student Art Show (2022)

Volunteering at Donwood Manor PCH I ran an art class once a week for 2 years. I had 3 regular students who came to every class while other students came and went. I taught the elements of art, art history and themed crafting classes. None of the artist had painted before my class but grew more confident and eager to learn as they practiced, beginning to make art in their own time and gather personal supplies.

Throughout my time there, students sometimes brought friends and family members to class. And I did the same. It became a gathering of different generations sharing stories and desires over a shared desire to create. We came together in the mornings through different life events such as 100 year birthdays, new jobs, and even loss.

At the end of the first year, we held an art show to display their work. A year later Albert, who is now 101, had an independent show and was featured in the news. You can most clearly see the growth and skill over the years in Albert’s work. Each student has developed their own style and remain a friend of mine.
