Urban Art in the Wild: Tenacity

Written by:

A night of Urban Art in the Wild. I invited the folks of Flin Flon to crochet with me. I created a gathering space and provided resources for people to browse or ask questions about; all sources reflected different women’s groups, through an intersectional lense, that have used fibre/textile arts in their liberation movements or as symbols of resistance. The space mirrored the women’s groups that gathered around craft as a safe space to meet and plan, that were undermined and overlooked for being women doing women’s work.

The crochet rug, made with hand-dyed yarn, was important to the theme of Tenacity. Tenacity: the fibre and textile arts are often viewed as ‘craft’ , of lower value compared to “high” or fine arts.. but textile methods have been used for ages in forms of protest and continue to thrive. Its been used to question gender roles, expressions of identity, and labor divisions; to call out inequalities and divisions of race and class. Craft provided means of income for emancipated peoples. Craft and textiles represent and signify stories of loss, joy and freedom, pride and culture. The value is immeasurable.
